Customizing Persistence and Tracking SharePoint Workflows !

Question

Hello, i had implemented some SharePoint Workflows which interact with other external resources, such as quering database... sometimes the Workflow is stopped and its status is Error Occured, i don't know exactly why but, i am thinking about customizing Persistence and tracking to handel execution when such error occur we do some kind of rollback, the idea is to do some backup during the execution and restoring when we want. all that functionality should be implemented within a SharePoint Feature. Can i do that ?? have you any idea please ? Thanks !
