You could say that the DataSet is one of the key pillars of the ADO.NET architecture. It stores an in-memory collection of data that is retrieved from the data source. This can save you considerable round-trips to the database server to retrieve data in case of frequent use. A DataSet can contain one or more tables the tables can be related to each other through DataRelation objects. You can also use constraints for the data contained in the DataSet. The DataSet provides many powerful features to work with data. Say suppose you are using a DataSet to store employees data from the Emp table. You can view/add/modify/delete the data and then once all changes are done you can easily update the DataSet back to the table.
