You can use app pools on virtuals as well with all the benefits they bring. If binding to a particular port (and possibly using host headers but I haven't verified that point) is a requirement, a website is what you want.

All Website's are working in one virtual directory. An Website in IIS has all sorts of cool stuff * It's own application-level variables. * In IIS6 it has an application pool in which you can configure recycling of the application and memory/cpu consumption * You can set host headers/ip addresses in IIS web sites. A virtual directory has one advantage I can think of - it can point to a directory outside of your website structure. for instance - if you have your website under C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\website1, you can set a virtual directory to point to any location on your pc and even a network location.
