NULL is a absence of value where a field having NULL is not allocated any memory where as empty fields have empty value with allocated space in memort. NULL can be assigned to any fields irrrespective of it's type.

Assuming the column is nullable null is the absence of any value (it is set to nothing) empty would be setting the value to an empty string or empty character ( or '').
