Difference between production support and a developer what is the best

Please tell me the difference i got the job for production support in mnc from a developer

Prod Support has processes and a discipline of its own. These are complementary, at best, with what you'd learn when doing Development. For example, in Support, you won't really learn how to put together code in an Agile process, but you will learn how to effectively manage incidents and restore service quickly. From experience running Production Support teams, the best Support folks come with good Development backgrounds and the converse isn't necessarily true (you won't become a great Developer by doing Prod Support, though you might be more conscientious about the code you write). Sure, there is something to be learned for Developers in Support. For example, you'll have a better view of how systems are architected and will have some insight into the environments where applications run, but unless you're doing something like Level 3 Support (bug-fixes), don't expect to be able to code elegant solutions. Even with Level 3 Support, the design decisions are already made for you. I would say, if you want to launch a Dev career, get a Dev position. There's plenty of them out there. The term "developer" is very ambiguous; it can mean many things. You need to ask the people using the term what they mean. It could mean new development or it could mean maintenance. Most programmers want to do new development, which means that they write a new program themself. Maintenance programmers modify existing programs. A production support person might not be a programmer. They might do things to ensure that programs get executed successfully. If they are a programmer, then they are probably on-call all the time and would be the first person called when there is a problem. For most people, production support is among the least desirable jobs but it could be a good way to get started as a programmer.

Hi, The developer actually involves in the engineering activities like developing product/project. Responsible for design, coding, unit testing, documentation,etc.., The support engineer actually involves the maintenance activities, customer support and small enhancement. The support engineer should have complete knowledge about the project/product. Usually developer needs more activities then support engineer. They need to know latest technologies, can apply their logic,etc..,

One of the major difference between the roles is, developer role you need not know detail functionality of non dependent modules of your product or project incase it's not getting developed from scratch, but that's not the case in production support, you need have complete knowledge of your existing application
