An exception is a runtime error which if not caught will cause the application to end prematurely. Exceptions can usually be caught using a try/catch/finally statement though there are some exceptions which are fatal - such as a stack overflow exception - because they would otherwise leave the application in an unstable condition. In .NET all exceptions derive from the System.Exception class. As well as those defined in the .NET Framework you can define your own custom exceptions if you wish.
