The query that you run in any database server, comprises of multiple statements and operations like SELECT, JOIN, DELETE, UPDATE. When you run your query, database server engine breaks it into multiple parts and analyse it and find the most efficient way to execute your query to access data from and write data to database server. Thus execution plans shows you how are query is being executed in server read or manipulate data to server. It shows you the cost of execution of query in terms of time and resources taken by different parts of the query.
