Java is a fully object oriented language and all methods and fields must therefore be members of a class - they can't stand on their own as in some other languages such as C++. However you can effectively create global variables using public static fields. For example: public class Global { public static int SomeVariable = 0; } You can then access the 'global' variable with the syntax Global.SomeVariable.
