How can i delete the last character in xml file in vb.net

How can i delete the last character in xml file in vb.net

I am writing the values again and again in xml file its updating

but in some times in xml file its adding extra closing character

like

<groups>

</groups>>

this symbol is my problem

please help me can anyone solve itttttttttt
