If you don't care about ordering of the files' text in list box, then try getting allfiles' text using parallel.foreach (bit faster) and later convert the same to list and bind to listbox. private void GetAllFileText(ConcurrentBag string > allFilesText) { string path = @ "path	estTextFiles" ; DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(path); /*SearchOption.AllDirectories can be used * if there are folders and those contains text files */ Parallel.ForEach(di.GetFiles( "*.txt" , SearchOption.TopDirectoryOnly),file=> { allFilesText.Add(File.ReadAllText(file.FullName)); }); } And in your main/calling method, ConcurrentBag string > AllFilesText = new ConcurrentBag string >(); GetAllFileText(AllFilesText); listBox1.DataSource = AllFilesText.ToList();
