How to convert String value to ascii

Dear Friends Can anybody help me? How can you convert string to ascii value and again ascii valu to string? I need to use this method to encrypt password and again decrypt the password.

Hi Dinusha As a string is (essentially) an array of unicode characters there's no point in converting the string to bytes first in that particular scenario. You might as well just convert it to a char array add 20 to each element of the array convert back to a string and save that to the database. You can then reverse these steps when you recover the encoded string from the database to obtain the original string. Also you now have access to (nearly) all 64K unicode characters and not just the first 128. Here's some code: string s = Hello; char[] ca = s.ToCharArray(); // encode by adding 20 to each char for(int i = 0; i { ca[i] += (char)20; } // convert back to a string for storage in database string encoded = new string(ca); Console.WriteLine(encoded); // \y??? // decode by deducting 20 from each char and convert back to a string ca = encoded.ToCharArray(); for(int i = 0; i { ca[i] -= (char)20; } string decoded = new string(ca); Console.WriteLine(decoded); // Hello

Hi Alan Thank you very much for your kind support...... I have an another prob like this here after you add 20 to the byte variable I want to convert that into char and save that in the database. And again do the decoding and get back the original value. And also in the first example that you have given the method only for basic ascii code range. So how can you extend the range? Could you please help me ? Thanks

Dear Alan Thank you very much for your reply. There is another prob I have with this that is I want to add 20 into the each ascii code and then convet it into string and again I need to convert that string into ascii and subtract 20 to get the original string character. Could you please help me?

This code should do it: System.Text.ASCIIEncoding encoding = new System.Text.ASCIIEncoding(); // to convert each character in a string to its ASCII equivalent string s = Hello; byte[] ba = encoding.GetBytes(s); foreach (byte b in ba) { Console.Write({0} b); // 72 101 108 108 111 } Console.WriteLine(); // to convert byte array back to a string again string t = encoding.GetString(ba); Console.WriteLine(t); The code as it stands can only deal with characters in the range 0-127 i.e. the basic ASCII range. As single byte characters are not supported by .NET you have to use byte arrays to represent ASCII strings instead.
