For deploying webpart into production server we will use STSADM or powershell commands for installing deploying and activating based for the particular web application on the production server.ex:ststadm -o addsolutionsp-addsolution -filename url

In SharePoint 2010 if we created an webpart then the output file format is WSP always. Or if you are using SharePoint 2007 then we explicitly create a dwp file for webpart for deployment purpose. Once try from visual studio 2010 by taking a Visual webpart template or webpart template then you are getting the WSP file when deploy it.
