SignalR is the main technology used for creating the chat application. You can have two options: 1- Go for SignalR and explore it. 2- Create Simple Application, provide simple window to user where he will write his message and will click on send now just save the message in db using his unique ID, message and Unique ID of reciever, now refresh the page after 1-2 min on reciever side this will let the other person know that someone has messaged him. Now he can reply to same user using his assigned unique id. SignalR can provide you the functionality where you doesn't need to refresh the page explicitly but second option can be created easily but with some JUGAD :) .
