how to limit repeated value of a colunm in inserting values

I tried this update Student set Sup_Name =(select top 1 Supervisors.Sup_Name from Supervisors order by newid())where student.St_ID = '98754' and I used update beuase I need to insert into one column

Why won't you check your condition in your program that if the particular query was ececuted more than 3 times then throw exception?

thanks Nilsh I mean insert into the column e same value into the column e.g insert abc into column 3 times and when you insert it for 4th time the condition in query prevent inserting

I think you need to clarify your question what do you mean by insert 3 time in a column? what do you mean by the query prevent this insert? is there some error? give us example using data

Thanks Rajkiran I don't neet to select unique value but I neet to insert the value into a column only 3 time for example and when I try to insert the same for more than 3 times the query prevent this insert Please help
