Notepad++ is a programmer's editor which supports tabbed editing and syntax highlighting for various languages including assembler mnemonics. It can be downloaded free from here: http://www.notepad-plus-plus.org/ Notice though that it's not an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). So after you've loaded your .asm file into Notepad++ edited and saved it you'll need to assemble it separately (using MASM or some other assembler) to produce an executable process.

First you'll need to get an assembly listing. In VS 2008 (?) go to the Project menu and then select Properties -> Configuration Properties -> C/C++ -> Output Files -> Assembler Output to specify a path for the assembly file. The .asm file extension should be used. You can then add that file to a new General - Empty Project and if you right click the project name in Solution Explorer select Custom Build Rules and then 'masm' your project will be assembled using the Microsoft Macro Assembler. If I were you I'd build the menu project in C first. When you've successfully compiled it you can then use the C compiler to create an assembly listing (your compiler should have a switch for this). If you want you can then 'tweak' the assembly code and re-assemble it using your assembler.
