How to restore my Windows XP backup files on Windows 8?

Question

I have just installed Windows 8 on my machine and when I try to restore my old XP backup files in Windows 8, it throws an error message 'unrecognized data'. But one question arise in my mind that ntbackup.exe utility does not work in Windows 8 for creating backup so why I need to install this utility on my machine for extracting backup files. Is there any external software application which can do this without installing ntbackup.exe utility?
