For polynomials of degree higher than two and equations involving transcendental functions (log exp sin cos etc) it's best to use iterative methods such as Newton-Raphson. There's a C# library here ( http://www.codeproject.com/KB/recipes/nonlinear.aspx ) which does that for a system of non-linear equations - presumably it can also solve a single equation which contains a single variable.

What kind of algebraic equations do you want to solve? For quadratic equations see my article ( http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/b942f9/6093/ ). The solution of a linear equation: ax + b = 0 where a != 0 is simply -b/a.
