How to start .NET?

I am totally new to .NET though I have 10 yrs of experience in VB 6.0. Where to start to learn .NET?

The first thing you need to decide is which language to learn : C# or VB.NET. If you have ten years experience in VB6 but no experience in C/C++, then you will certainly be more comfortable, syntax wise, with VB.NET even though it's really a very different language from its predecessor. However, if you do have some C++ experience and don't need to get up to speed very quickly, I'd consider C# instead. This language was designed from the ground up for .NET and so doesn't have any of the legacy baggage which VB.NET inevitably has.

I've always been an admirer of Herb Schildt's books on the C-family languages and, from the point of view of simply learning the language (as opposed to the various .NET technologies) I don't think you can go far wrong with this one: http://www.amazon.com/C-4-0-The-Complete-Reference/dp/007174116X As the title indicates this covers C# 4.0 and we are now up to C# 5.0 but only a couple of new features were added between the two version and so you can easily learn those later.

Hi Thanks a lot for your advice. I think, I will go for C# even though it will take little more effort than for VB.NET. Could you please suggest me the best resource on net to start the study. Most of the resources, I have seen are not for total biginner like me, they presume some basic knowledge about the technology. Regards Sameer

yes agree with vulpes. Mean while you have to select technology also either you go with web technology or winform, WPF, MVC....etc.
