How to unable pop up on click of a button in sharepoint 2010

Hi Guys,

 

I have a requirement saying a buttton needs to be placed on the page, which on click opens up a pop up similar to the scenario like on click of view properties for an item in documnet library. that pop up window should give the description of the embedded data. For this to happen i have installed media web part and inserted a HTML button in it. Now the functionality of this button is . on click pop up data in a window with background blurred and show some description of the button. when i googled i got some artifacts related modal pop up, but i didnt get the exact resolution steps Can you please help on how to proceed with functionality.

 

Also, how to apply background image on the master page (means the image will be applied on the complete page).
