Yeah interviewers tend to irritate me. Sometimes they don't know what they're talking about as they're not programmers themselves or they're trying to catch you out with some trick question that has an obscure answer which no-one would even dream of using in practice!

Same thing happens to me once :). I asked what you mean by suppress the exception. I was not able to answer what he wants. But after the session i asked him about this. He said how to show user defined messages when exception occurs. I got confused whats the relation that. Anyway Still am not sure that was the answer for that. But taut of sharing it here. Suppress also means forcibly put an end to.

Well I'm sorry to be pedantic but to suppress means to keep from public knowledge - no more no less. There's no implication that anything should or should not be shown in its place. If they'd asked me that question at an interview and told me my answer was wrong that's exactly what I'd have told them!

Now days most of the people ask this question to candidates. Suppress means how to avoid system generated errors and show user defined error messages. It may be that I'm misunderstanding the question but the whole point of a try/catch block is to prevent an application from ending with an error message if the exception can be handled in some other way. As far as the 'catch' clause is concerned you don't need to display a message to the user but can simply handle the exception 'silently'.

Are you sure about this answer Vulpes. Because my friend tried the same answer when he got interviewed. But Interviewer argued there is some other way like that. I too searched in google but didnt get a valid point.

Well the idea is that if an error occurs in the 'try' block then the exception is caught in the 'catch' block. This then enables you to do something about it without the application blowing up.
