element instanceof RenderedWebElement should work. OR Even though I'm somewhat late answering the question: You can now use to check the element is visible or not. WebElement.isDisplayed()

if( driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(a > font)).isDisplayed()){ System.out.println(Element is Visible); }else{ System.out.println(Element is InVisible); } instead of cssSelector you can use any of the selector.
