HP has started laying off employees already. 500 supposed to be gone from San Diego office.

I am sure that the people responsible for what HP did with the Touchpad regret the decisions or at least have gotten plenty of criticism. Fortunately for me I got one at the lower price. I hope Android does get ported to the Touchpad. That might be the future of Touchpad; HP has said that they will not make any more WebOS Touchpads but they have not said anything about Android. That of course depends on whether they have reversed the decision to get out of the tablet business. I hope that Meg Whitman is better at running HP than running our state of California; the voters here did not want her.

I don't what they were thinking of launching the TouchPad and then killing it after only 7 weeks. Even I could have told them that a webOS based tablet computer was doomed from the start!

Yes there have been many layoffs by many companies. Perhaps HP is holding the jobs for ransom. They probably want the government to pay them money to hire the employees back.
