Importance of indexes

Can someone explain to me how to know when an index is needed? I think my program is running slowly because I dont fully understand indexes

Friend Index is used when you need to perform your application's search performance to be better .. Index is Same as for example when you want to find Some Topic in Book and if you have Made index the its easier to locate particular topic in Book .. Same like that if you have created Index in SQL Server database then for SQL Server its Easy for SQL server to Locate the Particular records from Massive amount of data .
