Repository pattern - is a perfect pattern forseparating ourapplication from data layer / data sources- so our application will be independentof the database technology we are using.. In other words its an abstraction between application and the database.. Let me explain withexample - Suppose we have an application and we are using SQL server as database so wewrite code to read write update and delete records from SQL server inour application. all works good now suppose we have new requirementof XML / excelfiles for storing data so again we will have to modify our application to write logic for read write update and delete from excel / xml.. In such scenarios - we would add a layer between our application and the various database / one database..- that is the Repository layer. This way the applicationwill onlymake standard calls to the repository and how the logic for various operations interacting to different data sourceswill all be take care by the repository.It's not the headache of the application. In simple language -Using repository pattern - you would expose a set of methods that your application need to call. These are common methods also called as CRUD operation - CREATE  READ UPDATE and DELETE... Each data source will adhere to the common methods.. and your application need not know that complexities. -that said - this pattern creates a layer of abstraction between application and the underlying data source Another benefit - you change the underling data sourcepoint it to a WCF web serviceor Cloud data source - your applicationwill not be impacted and needno change.. - you needto updated your repository layer to accommodate the new functionality.. Hi Repository Pattern separates the data access logic and maps it to the entities in the business logic. It works with the domain entities and performs data access logic. It hides the details of data access from the business logic. In other words business logic can access the data object without having knowledge of the data access architecture. For example in the Repository pattern business logic is not aware whether the application is using LINQ to SQL or ADO.NET Entity Model ORM.
