Increment operations

Question

hi..

In the c-programming ...

suppose i =10;

i=i++;
The above statement will result that i is incremented by 1, the value of I is 11.

but,.. In the c# the value Of i is remain the same 10..

why?

It's not easy to explain this but I'll try. In C# the result of applying the postfix operator ++ to 'i' is still 'i' and is stored in a temporary memory slot not in 'i's slot. However immediately after this operation has taken place the variable 'i' is incremented so that its memory slot now contains its previous value plus 1. So with this code: int i = 10; i = i++; Console.WriteLine(i); the result of the operation i++ is still 10 even though immediately afterwards (and before the assignment takes place) the variable i contains the value 11. Now then the assignment takes place the variable i is assigned the result of the operation on the RHS (from the temporary slot) which is 10. This overwrites the value it just got of 11. So when you print 'i' to the console you get 10. C (or at any rate Microsoft's C compiler) does things differently in that the result of the operation i++ is still 10 initially but then gets immediately incremented to 11 as does the variable itself. Consequently when the result gets assigned back to 'i' it's now 11 rather than 10.

If you want do forcefully like this so use this code to do i=10 ; i = ++i ; you will get 11

Dear Gaurav No need to assign a vlue in same variable when you increment any value if you use like this Suppose i =10; i++; you will be get 11 value 0f i in c# it increment value after assigning thats why you get old value .
