If instead of : string[] lineV = line.Split(' '); you use: string[] lineV = line.Split(new char[]{' '} StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries); then it will deal with the problem of multiple space between items.

Well that code is (more or less) the LINQ equivalent of the 'traditional' code I posted earlier except that it will work if the search word is contained in not just one but multiple lines and prints out the whole text of the matched line and not just its line number. The File.ReadLines() method reads the lines of the file one by one without storing them all in memory at the same time which is important if you have 50000 lines to read. For each line an anonymous 'tuple' is then created consisting of the text of the line and the line number (starting from 1). These tuples are then filtered so that only those whose 'text' property includes the search word are returned. The foreach statement then iterates through the filtered tuples and prints to the console the line number and the text of the matched line. So it sounds like that's what you want.

You can use string.Split() to split the string on whitespace; you will get an array-element back for every space (so your index will not be 4); you can loop through the array and ignore empty array elements.
