Here's a quick console app to illustrate the point in my previous post. Notice how much easier it is to pass a row of the jagged array to a method compared to passing a row of a rectangular array: using System; class Test { static void Main() { // create rectangular array int[] rect = {{123} {456} {789}}; // create jagged array int[][] jagged = new int[3][]{new[]{123} new[]{456} new[]{789}}; // print first row of rectangular array int[] row1 = new int[rect.GetLength(0)]; for(int i = 0; i PrintArray(row1); Console.WriteLine(); // print first row of jagged array PrintArray(jagged[0]); Console.ReadKey(); } static void PrintArray(int[] ia) { foreach(int i in ia) Console.WriteLine(i); } }

Even in cases were the array elements are all of the same length it may be more convenient to create a jagged array rather than a rectangular array so you can manipulate the rows as a whole rather than using iteration.
