Although it's not difficult to write a Java application which can generate all three letter strings from a five letter word entered by the user deciding whether those strings represent actual English words (or commonly used words) is a different matter. Basically you'd need to check the strings against a dictionary of valid words. Do you think this is what the question is asking you to do? If so which online dictionary should be used?
