Java vs C#

Question

Today I had a lunch (chinese) with Inil co-founder of http://www.tweetalicious.com/ . Inil is a Java/Linux guy and obviously you know we. He could not agree on if C# is better and faster or Java. Inil thinks Java/Linux/MySQL development is faster in general than C#/Windows/SQL Server. Thoughts? Research? Links?

Hi Mahesh this extract is from msdn: So which language is superior? You have Java which will run on many different operating systems without recompiling code. You have C# which seems to have many more built-in language features and will run on any operating system that has an installed CLR. Naturally if you have limited development time and need an application that can run on almost any operating system then Java seems to be the obvious current choice. But if you know that your application will run on Windows and you have or don't have limited development time using a good type-safe powerful language like C# seems to a very excellent decision. Normal 0 Software test engineer can better know about which language is faster. For example if we create a login in page using c# and java language. Unless you have considerable experience of developing for both platforms (which I don't) it's difficult to even comment. The Microsoft products are probably more complex so it wouldn't surprise me if the Java trio had the edge on both performance and development time. Most benchmarks I've seen in recent years give Java a slight lead over C# in execution speed. However I would be surprised if the difference was sufficiently marked to be a factor in deciding whether to use one or the other. As a programmer the choice of programming language and standard libraries is very important to me and after using C# for 10 years I don't think I'd be very comfortable switching to Java :(
