Hi Jason, I have never used it, I came across it a while back while looking for some thing else so never really had a need to keep track of it but I am sure that through it or links on the pages there is code that does what you are after, I believe it is used to identify boundaries of objects and such. This is about as much as I can help good luck Jason.

thanks for your replies. Is MATLAB a open source library or such? I searched and results referred me to OpenCV. Has anyone used it before and could advice me? Thanks

Sam, The difference here is that I openly state that my example is crap and not to use it. Why does it sound like a question about electronics, it could well have been a question about gas mains detection underground. One other thing, a much much more talented programmer than I said on another forum C++ that something could not be done in response to a question asked, I responded with source code showing how to do what could not be done. I did not do it to show up the talented programmer I did it because I refused to accept that some things cannot be done all you need to do is free your mind and think outside the square. I hope you understand what I am saying...

theLizard, you are correct that my reply is not worth points; if I wanted points I would not have posted what I did. I know that I am less likely to get points from posting bad news. I hope that my reply will motivate Jason to look around; I agree that there is likely a lot of help available. I did say that there is " probably software that has already been developed that will help ". Also note that your words say that your code "may work albeit a completely inefficient way"; isn't that what you are criticizing others of doing? I am not saying that your code won't help but I am saying that you are doing things that you are criticizing others of doing.

Hello Jason Yes there is always a way of doing things even if using a ?anable language. Sometimes it is how you ask google the question, some people on this form simply respond because they want points. this link explains some of the details you want http://www.mathtools.net/MATLAB/Image_Processing/ ask google this question " detecting rectangles c# " It is NOT that difficult to read in pixel colors form an image file, what you need to do is store the values in an array then analyse the arrays values looking for the pattern you seek. if(row[0] pixcell[0] == clBlack) is it start of a line? maybe if(row[0] pixel[1] == clBlack) could be a line keep going if(row[0] pixel[2] == clBlack) is this a pattern i detect! could be if(row[0] pixel[3] == clBlack) Hmmm looks like a pttern Ok this is not conclusive if(row[0] pixel[0] == clBlack && row[1] pixel[0] == clBlack) if(row[0] pixel[1] == clBlack && row[2] pixel[0] == clblack) what is the angle Now this is a pretty crappy way of doing things but it may work albeit a completely inefficient way. I am sure MATLAB may help you in the right as I recall seeing example code some where that dealt with these issues ps don't try to use the example code it will not work just there to help you visualize a solution.

Okay I understand better. You have an image that is a floor plan, correct? Is it just the image; is there no data with it that describes rooms and walls and such? You need to determine where the walls are at, correct? Buildig contractors sometimes get blueprints and they need to analyze the blueprints in order to decide whether to bid on the project and how much to bid and such. That is often called a "take-off". Are you doing something such as that? The requirements of such a software project are significant. It is not easy to do. You need to get a book that teaches graphics programming. You should look for a book that teaches about graphics recognition explicitely. There is probably software that has already been developed that will help, but you might have to pay for it.

Sometimes people try to put the question in the subject, and when they do, more than 90% of the time the question needs clarification. You put "lines detection/recognisation" in the subject then said "implement this". And as usual, the question needs clarification. The subject should be used just to give other people an indication of whether they are likely to help, or if the question will help them if they are looking for answers. The subject should not be for the question itself. You should create a subject that experts can use to decide whether to look at your question. The subject "lines detection/recognisation" sounds like a question about electronics so experienced developers are less likely to look at it.

You can use the Wikipedia to get quick and useful answers. Don't use it a the only resource for things, but often it has enough information for me. See MATLAB . The list near the bottom of other software appears useful too.
