Optimization of Windows Application

May I get some tips to optimize the speed of Windows application any good advises will be appreciated.

Use String.IsNullOrEmpty for checking null value of a string. Use String.Compare for comparing two string values. Do not use ToLower ToUpper and Trim. Use StringBuilder.Append to concatenate strings inside loop. Make sure to do null check for all objects before using the same. Catch specific exception wherever possible. Do not have empty catch blocks. Do not use throw. Always return long value specifying the error if any in the method. Check error code wherever applicable and return immediately if there is an error. If a property value will be used many times inside a method assign it to a local variable and use the local variable. Like that so many are there. You should know where to use which function and where to use which technology. Decision making plays here. For a single table manipulation we can use either a DataTable or DataSet. But we need to choose which one will be an optimal one. There the performance succeeds.
