hi, Properties provide the opportunity to protect a field in a class by reading and writing to it through the property. In other languages, this is often accomplished by programs implementing specialized getter and setter methods. C# properties enable this type of protection while also letting you access the property just like it was a field. Another benefit of properties over fields is that you can change their internal implementation over time. With a public field, the underlying data type must always be the same because calling code depends on the field being the same. A property is an attribute of an object. It's most frequently used to control access to a data member (or field) of an object and can ensure that only valid values are assigned to the field. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as a 'smart field'. However, properties can do other things such as perform calculations based on the values of a number of fields. Usually, properties have both 'get' and 'set' accessors when they are referred to as read/write properties. However, they can also have only a 'get' accessor (read-only) or, rarely, just a 'set' accessor (write-only). C# also supports: 1. Indexed properties (or indexers), which are properties with the same name as the class itself, which take at least one parameter. This is often an int or string which serves as an index or key into an array, list or dictionary. 2. Automatic properties, where the compiler generates the backing field which can only be accessed via the get and set accessors of the property. As you can't add any code to the latter, this only enables simple access to the hidden field and no validation is possible. 3. Mixed access properties, where the access modifier (public, protected, private etc) of the set (or get) accessor is more restrictive than the access modifier of the property as a whole. Under the hood, the get and set accessors of a property are simply methods. Some object oriented languages such as C++ or Java don't support properties as such but can simulate them by defining accessor methods.
