Proxy classes and linq proxy with sharepoint 2010

Question

Hi All,

I was working with Linq to sharepoint with the SPMetal.exe and with a few good posts i could get how LINQ pulls data from sharepoint lists. I wanted to understand what exactly is a proxy class and a proxy object in simple words and why are they called so.
