The public key token is used to make the assembly name unique. A public key token. This is a 64-bit hash of the public key that corresponds to the private key used to sign the assembly. This information is added to the assembly metabase. If you want to view the metabase of an assembly use ILDASM. You can drill down into what is stored in the metabase in addition to seeing the IL.
