Reading and writing Word documents

Question

I've never had to deal with programmatic access to Office documents but that's recently changed. I'm hoping for a relatively simple C# solution (rather than VBA) that will allow me to read from and write to Word documents (doc and docx) and keep the formatting. I don't mind if there's some complexity involved to achieve this so long as it isn't arcane.

Hi if need to C# read Word files of relatively small size (20 paragraphs or less) you can do it for free with this C# / VB.NET Word library. You can C# write Word files of any size for free with this library but after 20 paragraphs additional header will be added to your document. Library has simple and very easy to use API and very good performance.

I didn't specify this in my first post but I'm not looking for a commercial solution. I don't mind using third-party libraries as long as they're generally accepted and free (my budget is very low). I want to be handling the plumbing myself.
