1. We use a private constructor if we don't want the user to be able to instantiate the class (though nowadays we can use a static class instead) or we only want the user to be able to instantiate the class using a static 'factory' method so we can control the number of instances created. 2. We use a static constructor to initialize static fields which can't (or can't easily) be initialized when they are declared. 3. In the circumstances mentioned in #2 above. Suppose you're initializing a large static array using a formula for instance.
