If you use mailto option then it will open your default mail client from your system. If you didn't use the mailto option you no need to configure any mail client outlookthunderbird etc...

The best way is as said by Murali. I don't recall the details but it sure is possible to send email using JavaScript. It requires additional software but there is plenty of that available.

You can't send an email directly from Javascript. There is no support for this in javascript.
