let me explain you in simple words.. many companies has such project on which many developers/programmers works from different region/countries together. sharepoint is such a platform which provides this facilities to bind many development team using very high securities even. do you know webhosting? well in this we design and develop our websites and put in on shared web server using ftp etc. why we put this on shared server? because that server has reserved ip and it available always online so any visitor access the website otherwise if you put that content on your pc then it will not be visible in any way that's impossible without having proper ip and many more things. sharepoint is same, that's hosting, we purchase space on server which has sharepoint installed. then we create teams there and all are highly secure. why sharepoint instead of simple webhosting? because sharepoint includes every microsoft product line simple office tool (word,excel etc) to web services even apps. and on single project multiple programmers works together via online. they only need a single browser to access sharepoint even they don't need to install software on personal pc. sharepoint is also accessible from another sharepoint that you have installed. there are lots more and never going to end, every day it adds something new. thanks
