Should graduation contiue to be a basic criteria for hiring?

Kavita See the first line that I wrote. I wrote that this is my Personal opinion. I am not a CEO I am not running any company. The views of company managers and hiring recruiters are very different from mine. They think in the way they have been conditioned to think since decades. According to them a graduate means someone who has undergone a minimum of 3 years of education at college level and to them this means that the person has skills at many levels (or so they assume). The companies need to change their mindsets with changing times and need to accept that all not graduates or engineers are rockstar developers or that all rockstar developers are not necessarily graduates. I have personally seen some college dropouts who have gone out to become big successes in life. It's time that companies also recognized this fact. -Mamta

@Mamta  Then why should one be a graduate if only knowledge matter why do they ask for graduates and percentage?????? Then we challenge all these professionalslet them burn their certificates and prove their worth.....

If you ask me personally I'd say No. A Big No. If I were running my own startup and was looking for a developer/writer/tester I would look for experience projects worked on projects failed (even the ones failed teach some valuable lessons) and the knowledge that the person has absorbed rather than his/her degree. Degrees are important to an extent but in a country like ours a person can even go through a 5 year degree course and still come out empty in terms of real world knowledge. Almost 2-3 years in such long term courses are spent in learning subjects that one may never use again in life. To cite my own example I learnt Engineering Drawing Mechanics and Electronics most of which never turned out useful in any way to my work life/career. Today's kids are smarter and sharper. They begin early and learn faster. You can even see 17 yr olds thinking of making iphone apps. Because of their young age they have tremendous enthusiasm and energy. That energy and enthu needs to be tapped by companies and organizations instead of merely looking for degrees. They should identify early talents nurture those talents and make the persons as well as the companies grow. Both can benefit. In this regard the Imagine Cup and DreamSpark initiatives by Microsoft are terrific - they look for early (young) talent. There are more such initiatives out there though not many are well-known. -Mamta
