Question

How to Format a silverlight label to only a 6 character string in silverlight?

Basically the input is going to only be 6 characters. So I want to ensure that the input of the label will always be 6 characters

It's a technique which works best when you're using a non-proportional font and all the characters therefore have the same width. I've used it myself to create multi-column listboxes in Windows Forms where it would otherwise be difficult to get the columns to line up.

There's no direct way to restrict the number of characters in a label, though I suppose you could do it indirectly by figuring out how wide the label needs to be to accommodate (say), WWWWWW, in whatever font you're using and then setting both the MaxWidth and MinWidth properties to that width.

Sorry about that. I can handle it in array or something. I can do it that way. Basically my status area is going to always to be updated from the windows service via labels. At the moment I am just assign the labels. I wasn't sure if silverlight had a max length for labels.

You've called the thread "Silverlight : Format TextBox" and, even though you were then talking about a label, you were also taking about 'input' so I thought that you must mean TextBox after all :) So, if it's just a label, why are you bothered about restricting its length when what you put in it is in your own hands?

This is a label , not a textbox, I dont see a maxlength for a label.

Well, you can set the MaxLength property of the TextBox to 6 to ensure the user doesn't enter more than 6 characters. However, there's no corresponding 'MinLength' property so you'd have to use validation, as Mahadesh suggested, if you wanted to ensure the user entered exactly 6 characters.
