i think i am being a muppet at the moment. i have a OKbtn that is designated as the accept button for the form. how can i stop the window from closing if the ok fails. for example on a login screen if the username or password is not correct i want the form to stay there cheers

it was simple. had set the property of the button to dialogresult. this meant that it forced the form to close. soon as i removed this it worked as planned

Your form has a closing event (you may find this in Form VAse Events). This event has an argument of type CancelEventArgs. Simply set this argument to true and your form will not close.
