One thing to note about the various string methods is that whilst they might appear to be altering the string in fact they always create and return a new string object. This is because strings are immutable - once you've created them they can't be changed. If you want a mutable string then use a char array (fixed length) or a StringBuilder (variable length) instead. These can then be converted to a string when you've completed the operations.
