Timer VS Thread

Question

Hello every body... :)

Can some body tell me,
What the Best Way to get auto update form with dynamic database ?

sample,
i create some program that can show datagrid automatic update content when new data has been inserted into database.

what the best solution ? Timer or Threading ?

Do you need your application to be responsive while the data is being fetched from the database? If you do not put in a secondary thread your UI will not respond if data fetching process takes too much time. If your user is doing nothing while the data is being fetched you are good with the Timer. Obviously timer has less overhead.

Of course you don't say what type of application. If it is for ASP then that would sure be different.

Another possibility woud be the System.Windows.Forms.Application.Idle Event which would be like a timer. It depends on how much work is to be done. Also I think the answer depends on where the update is occuring. If it is the same program doing the update as the one that you need the UI to update for then you might be able to modify the program such that ADO .Net and .Net in general updates the UI automatically. If the update is occuring outside the program then it is possible for your program to get notification of database changes using triggers or something like that.
