What are the benefits or negatives of using static classes

Question

Hi I have been looking at static classes just lately and I use one for passing global variables around an application. I can think of lots of places in my code where I think a static class will work as well as an instantiated class. Could someone please tell me what are the benefits of one type over another and correct instances when one should be used over the other? Thanks John

Static class advantages and disadvantages: Advantage: Without creating instance you can call methods variables inside static class. It is faster than normal classes. Use static class which one you want to access frequently just like Utility library class in in Project. In utility class library most of classes are static because other project call methods frequently. Secondly you can implement singleton class using static variable. Disadvantage: Static class always stay in memory till application instance is running. If you create more static classes in your project it might be memory overflow – so use it wisely. When you declare a class as a static you can’t override or can’t implement inheritance. Static class doesn’t have constructor. We can’t pass static class to method. Again just keep in mind that static class may memory problem for you if you will not use wisely.
