What can & can't be programmed with .NET?

Hi guys,

I'm studying programming with C# and .NET at the moment. I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether or not .NET could be used to program applications for non-Microsoft operating systems such as Google Android or Chrome and also whether .NET could be used to program apps for things like the Apple iPhone?

Also, if this is the case, is .NET a good platform to create apps for these non-Microsoft operating systems, or is it that maybe it can be used in this manner but really isn't the best way to program for these operating systems or the best way to use .NET?

You can build any mobile software in .NET including iPhone apps. However, most of them have different APIs. You can build any other software with C# and .NET. Companies who built products (such as Adobe) do use C++ to build their products. I believe Visual Studio is built mostly in C# and partially in C++. All systems development is done using C++.

Hi Mahesh, Thanks very much indeed for that, it's a great help : ) Sorry for the late reply by the way, I've been a very busy bunny.. : ) Can I just ask? Although you can build any mobile software in .NET, is .NET better suited to programming just for Microsoft mobile operating systems rather than those of Google or Apple? For example, is it that .NET can be used in this way but it is that it is actually most suited to Microsoft based operating systems and that other programming languages are most commonly used to program for Google or Apple operating systems (because they are better for it?) So, those whose program for Google or Apple O/S's tend to use other software? The reason I ask is that I'm wondering where, as a fledgling programmer, I should be focusing my energies. I didn't want to sort of charge off and start thinking I should get myself really familiar with the Apple and Google operating systems and apps if what I've been studying hard to learn is really most suited to a Microsoft view of the world.
