what does |= mean in c#

I saw this line of code:

RadEditor1.ContentFilters |= (Telerik.Web.UI.EditorFilters)
Enum.Parse(typeof(Telerik.Web.UI.EditorFilters), box.Value);

It's been there since version 1.0 of C# as C/C++ also have it. It's most commonly used when combining enum values (as here) or in general bit shifting code.

In the same way that: a += b; is shorthand for: a = a + b; then: a |= b; is shorthand for: a = a | b; '|' is of course the bitwise OR operator. Check out: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/kxszd0kx(v=vs.71).aspx
