An assembly is a .NET program. It consists chiefly of Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) and metadata about the entities used in the program. This is generated by a .NET Compiler (C#, VB.NET etc) from the source code which you actually write. The Common Language Runtime (CLR) converts the MSIL to native code for the underlying platform and executes it - a process known as 'just in time' compilation. Assemblies also contain a 'manifest' - basically a list of what's in the assembly and may also contain embedded resources such as images or text files. There are two types of assemblies : executables (exes) and libraries (dlls). The former can be executed on its own and always contains an entry-point (a Main() method) where execution begins. The latter cannot be executed on its own and consists of libraries classes for use by other assemblies. Assemblies can be split up into modules (i.e. separate files) but, in practice, most .NET programs consist of a single module. In multi-module assemblies, one module (the main module) must contain the manifest for the assembly as a whole.
