The Common Language Runtime in short CLR is the virtual machine component of Microsoft's .NET initiative. It is Microsoft's implementation of the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) standard which defines an execution environment for program code. The CLR runs a form of bytecode called the Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL). The Common Language Runtime is somewhat comparable to the Java Virtual Machine that Sun Microsystems furnishes for running programs compiled from the Java language. Microsoft refers to its Common Language Runtime as a managed execution environment. A program compiled for the CLR does not need a language-specific execution environment and can easily be moved to and run on any system with Windows 2000 or Windows XP . -Abhishek Maitrey

CLR (Common Language Runtime) in which your ASP.NET and Webservice pages executed. It can automatic managed the memeory management and garbage collection. It can also store information about your assemblie files. It consist a metadata in which the information about your classes and members. It can handled structued error. The CLR provides a pool of threads means you can call methods read files or communicate with web services asynchronously without needint to explicityly create new threads. Good Luck ! jaw
