This sounds to me like the error you sometimes get if you're using the MarshalAs attribute when calling unmanaged functions from C#. This attribute takes an UnmanagedType enum member as a parameter and since the rules for marshalling between managed and unmanaged types are complex, you can easily come up with a mismatch.
