'Application' refers to an instance of a web application running on a server which may be accessed by multiple users from their browsers. 'Session' refers to a period of use of an application by a specific user. These terms are commonly used in relation to application and session state which are mechanisms used by ASP.NET to persist application-wide or user-specific data between postbacks to the server.
